Ezy Chef Story Began

How the Stephie’s Choice / Ezy Chef Story Began

From Personal Challenge to Purpose-Driven Manufacturing

Most businesses start with a plan.
Ezy Chef started with a promise — a promise to make a difference after one family faced one of life’s hardest challenges.

What began as a father’s way of caring for his daughter during her illness has grown into one of Australia’s most trusted names in texture-modified food and dysphagia meal solutions. Today, Ezy Chef’s mission is powered by both experience and empathy, and deeply connected to the legacy of Stephie, the little girl who inspired it all.

Here’s how her story led to the creation of Ezy FoodsEzy Chef, and the Stephie’s Choice Foundation, and how they’re changing lives through food.

What is dysphagia – and why does it matter?

Dysphagia is the medical term for difficulty swallowing. It affects a wide range of people, including:

  • Older adults in aged care
  • Patients in hospitals
  • People with conditions like Parkinson’s, stroke, dementia, or cancer

For those with dysphagia, eating isn’t just difficult — it can be dangerous. Without proper care, it can lead to choking, malnutrition, or aspiration pneumonia.

That’s where texture-modified foods come in. These meals are carefully designed to be safe to swallow, without compromising on nutrition or taste. They follow international guidelines known as IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative), which classify food and drink textures by level.

How Stephie’s journey inspired something bigger

Stephie was a bright, joyful young girl who faced a heartbreaking diagnosis: a terminal illness that would eventually affect her ability to swallow.

As her condition progressed, her father — now the founder of Ezy Chef — watched her struggle with something as simple as eating. The food options available to her were limited, bland, and often unappetising. It became clear there was a real need for meals that were not only safe to eat but also comforting and enjoyable.

So, he took matters into his own hands.

He started preparing meals specifically for Stephie — meals that were tailored to her needs but still made with care, flavour and love. That small act grew into a much bigger vision: to provide high-quality, texture-modified meals to others facing similar challenges.

From there, Ezy Chef was born. And later, Ezy Foods (following Stephie’s passing) — a purpose-driven food manufacturing business grounded in compassion, quality, and real-world experience.

What is Stephie’s Choice Foundation Ltd?

To honour Stephie’s memory, her family established the Stephie’s Choice Foundation Ltd — an ACNC Registered CHARITY dedicated to helping others less able.

Its mission is simple, yet powerful:
“Making a positive difference in people’s lives through Living in the Moment.”

The foundation raises awareness around ‘Living in the Moment’, supports Children and young adults with a disability and through Ezy Foods advocates for better food standards across care settings. It also collaborates with healthcare providers, NDIS partners, and food manufacturers to ensure people with swallowing difficulties aren’t overlooked.

In every initiative, Stephie’s spirit lives on — through food, support, and hope.

Turning purpose into production: the Ezy Chef difference

Today, Ezy Chef has evolved from a personal project into a national leader in dysphagia food solutions in Australia

They offer:

  • IDDSI-compliant texture-modified meals for aged care homes and hospitals
  • NDIS-approved meal services for individuals living with disabilities
  • Contract food manufacturing for organisations needing specialist meal production

But while the scale has grown, the mission hasn’t changed.

FAQs

What is texture-modified food?

Texture-modified food is food that has been specially prepared to be easier and safer to chew and swallow. It includes textures such as soft, minced and moist, and pureed. These meals follow IDDSI guidelines, making them suitable for people with swallowing disorders like dysphagia.

What is dysphagia and who does it affect?

Dysphagia is a condition that makes swallowing difficult or painful. It can affect people of all ages, but it’s most common in the elderly and those with medical conditions like stroke, Parkinson’s, motor neurone disease, or cancer. People with dysphagia often need texture-modified meals to avoid choking or aspiration.

How can food manufacturers help people with dysphagia?

Manufacturers like Ezy Chef support the dysphagia community by producing safe, nutritious and IDDSI-compliant meals. These meals are created in specialised kitchens, following strict texture and safety standards. Contract food manufacturing also allows aged care homes, hospitals, and other providers to access these meals without preparing them in-house.

What is the Stephie’s Choice Foundation?

The Stephie’s Choice Foundation Ltd was set up in memory of Stephie, whose story inspired the creation of Ezy Chef. The foundation promotes awareness of dysphagia, supports families and patients, and works with industry partners to improve access to texture-modified food across Australia.
